Windsor Library

The Windsor Library remodel was a deeply rewarding project that allowed Facilities by Design to blend functionality, modern aesthetics, and community-focused design. One of the primary goals of the renovation was to create a space that not only welcomes users but inspires them to stay and engage. To achieve this, we reimagined the layout to accommodate multiple uses, incorporating flexible seating areas, study nooks, and dedicated spaces for meetings and collaborations. The modern color palette, combined with natural light enhancements through updated windows and skylights, helped create a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. By using durable and sustainable materials, we ensured the design would stand the test of time while aligning with environmental considerations.

Our team also worked closely with the library to add innovative features that address the needs of today’s users. From the addition of improved technology access, including high-speed internet and updated computer stations, to a dedicated children’s section complete with interactive elements, every decision was made to balance modern needs with the library’s historical importance to the Windsor community. The remodel was not just about updating a space; it was about transforming it into a hub of innovation, creativity, and learning. Seeing the community gather in and appreciate the revamped library has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of the project, as it reinforced our commitment to designing spaces that elevate and enrich people’s lives.

"You absolutely nailed it—chef's kiss! The teams are utilizing the space as intended, the adults are very happy, and everyone keeps saying, 'Wow, I didn’t know the library was so big!' Even the director remarked, 'Wow, all the spaces are where they should be, and the flow is working so well!'

Project Facts

  • Start to finish: 14 months
  • Location: 9291 Old Redwood Highway, Building 100, Windsor, CA 95492
  • Furniture Budget: $200,000
  • Redesign space, source and install all new furniture and shelving.
  • Square footage: 4,400 sq. ft.
  • Employees: 2
  • Challenge: The City of Windsor managed the selection and installation of the carpet. However, just before it was set to be installed, we discovered that the carpet had never been ordered! Since this was outside the scope of our project management, we had to quickly adapt and identify a new flooring solution. The space had been designed with the original carpet in mind, so it was essential to find a replacement that maintained the intentionality of the design.

Paula's Project Thoughts...

When I visited the site after the installation, the impact of our design decision to lower the stacks was profound. The change significantly opened up the space, allowing much more natural light to flood in and completely transforming the environment. Additionally, relocating the circulation desk from the front of the library to the back further enhanced the openness, creating a more inviting and spacious atmosphere.
