San Rafael Library

Note: The photos featured below showcase the temporary space setup. We’re excited to share that photos of the permanent space will be available soon, so stay tuned!

Working on the San Rafael Library project was a uniquely rewarding experience. Our goal was to respect the library’s rich history while creating a modern and functional space that met the evolving needs of the community. We carefully considered every aspect of the design, from ensuring accessibility for all visitors, to crafting an environment that fosters learning and creativity.

Collaboration with the library staff was key in addressing challenges and implementing solutions that kept the project on track. Seeing the transformed space come to life and knowing it will serve as an invaluable resource for years to come is an incredible honor and a testament to the power of thoughtful design.

The San Rafael Library renovation is part of a $3million renovation project, made possible by donations and grants. We are focusing on modernizing the facility to better meet the needs of the community, including improved accessibility, technology updates, and an inviting atmosphere for all visitors. These efforts reflect a broader commitment to enhancing libraries as dynamic spaces that foster learning, connection, and community engagement. Such projects remind us at FBD of the importance of investing in public resources to create environments that serve both present and future generations.

"Paula and her team were lifesavers! They walked us through each step of the process, coming up with a space plan for the temporary space, helping us figure out how to furnish it, getting us organized to the smallest detail, and keeping us on schedule. They were the experts that we needed to help us figure out all the things that we didn’t even know we needed to do."

Paula's Project Thoughts...

This project is particularly exciting for us as it marks our first library project outside of Sonoma County. Transforming a unique temporary space, previously a beauty supply store and hair salon, into a functional and welcoming public service environment was a rewarding challenge. Additionally, the main library branch we are helping them move into is a historic Carnegie Library—our first time working with such a significant architectural landmark.
